The Daily Telegraph obituary of George Thomson reveals his family connections to the high command of the old SDP:

his daughter Caroline was married to the former SDP candidate Roger Liddle (later an adviser to Tony Blair) and her elder sister Ailsa to Dick (now Lord) Newby, the party's national treasurer.
